Chaozhou Xianshi is a kind of string music scored for ancient poetry. With a rich trove of ancient scores left behind, it preserves melodies from the Tang and Song dynasties, inheriting a complete performance system therefrom. This, coupled with local inheritance over a long history in the Chaozhou-Shantou (aka Chaoshan) region, have helped the genre develop its unique performing style, besides being regarded as a living fossil crucial for the study of Chinese ancient music. In this concert, guest virtuoso Wang Peiyu – a Chaoshan traditional musician, a renowned performer of Xianshi music, a Bearer of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Chaozhou Music in Shantou, Guangdong and a National First Class Composer – will be the Artistic Director. A rare classical Chaozhou music festival not to be missed!
